In 2001 I gained my first senior vest and was selected in the quadruple sculls for the World Championships. For the four of us in the crew it was our first qualification for a World Championship final in a sculling event, and we finished a creditable fifth. Again I matched this world ranking at the 2002 World Championships finishing fifth in a very tight field in the quadruple sculls. The 2002 year was also successful for me as I achieved a 2:1 Joint Honours degree in Sports Science and English. In 2003 I was selected for the World Championships in a new boat type, the double sculls. It was my first sniff at a senior world medal, and we were lying in bronze medal position in the final. Unfortunately we got rowed through by the previous years silver medallists and were left with a world placing of fourth.

My fortunes were to change however, and my hard work was going to pay off just in time for the 2004 Olympic Games. After a year of ranking in the top two in every domestic trial and assessment, I was selected into the quadruple scull again, the top ranked sculling boat. But this time we were a new combination and a young crew and I was going to stroke it. We had a very successful international racing season collecting two gold medals and a silver, and winning the World Cup Series overall. To top off competing at my first Olympic Games I came back with a silver medal having just lost out to a more senior and vastly more experienced German crew.
